The Edina Synchronized Swimming team went to state Thursday and Friday, where they placed third overall.
Thursday, they performed figures, solos and duets. Bridgette Fink placed seventh in short division figures, where each person at state individually performs an acrobatic move in front of the judges. Ellen Gaalswyk placed seventh in long division figures. Fink also placed fourth in the short solo, while Gaalswyk placed third in the extended solo. Gaalswyk and Nicole Wothe placed fifth in extended duets.
On Friday, they performed their trios and team routines, which consist of four to eight people. Bridgette Fink, Amy Denn and Aubrey Thorburn placed third in the short trio. Allie Denn, Olivia Swanson and Mackenzie Wolfe got seventh in the extended trio. Fink, Amy Denn, Brooke Gruidl, Callie Guimont, Dani Marty, Alayna Roess, Emilie Schmaltz and Aubrey Thorburn placed first in the short team. Allie Denn, Jenna Hiatt, Abby Higgins, Isabelle Porter, Abbey Schmitz, Swanson and Wolfe placed third in the long team. Abby Bilger, Sarah Denn, Leslie Gates, Ann Marie O’Connell, Emma Squires-Sperling, Katherine Vayda, Nicole Wothe and Emily Young got seventh place in the extended team.
Gaalswyk, along with five others from St. Louis Park, Wayzata and Stillwater, made the All State team.
The synchro team has had a great season. Of the 60 girls on the team, 48 qualified for state. “That’s the highest number I’ve ever had,” said coach Carla Steffen. Of the 26 routines they had this year, seventeen went to state.
