Synchronized Swimming wins third at State

The Edina Synchronized Swimming team went to state Thursday and Friday, where they placed third overall.

Thursday, they performed figures, solos and duets. Bridgette Fink placed seventh in short division figures, where each person at state individually performs an acrobatic move in front of the judges. Ellen Gaalswyk placed seventh in long division figures. Fink also placed fourth in the short solo, while Gaalswyk placed third in the extended solo. Gaalswyk and Nicole Wothe placed fifth in extended duets.

On Friday, they performed their trios and team routines, which consist of four to eight people. Bridgette Fink, Amy Denn and Aubrey Thorburn placed third in the short trio.  Allie Denn, Olivia Swanson and Mackenzie Wolfe got seventh in the extended trio. Fink, Amy Denn, Brooke Gruidl, Callie Guimont, Dani Marty, Alayna Roess, Emilie Schmaltz and Aubrey Thorburn placed first in the short team. Allie Denn, Jenna Hiatt, Abby Higgins, Isabelle Porter, Abbey Schmitz, Swanson and Wolfe placed third in the long team. Abby Bilger, Sarah Denn, Leslie Gates, Ann Marie O’Connell, Emma Squires-Sperling, Katherine Vayda, Nicole Wothe and Emily Young got seventh place in the extended team.

Gaalswyk, along with five others from St. Louis Park, Wayzata and Stillwater, made the All State team.

The synchro team has had a great season. Of the 60 girls on the team, 48 qualified for state. “That’s the highest number I’ve ever had,” said coach Carla Steffen. Of the 26 routines they had this year, seventeen went to state.

Sarah Nealon, Art Editor

If one were to assume that as Art Editor, Sarah is artsy, they would be entirely correct. Sarah can often be caught doodling random lines on her notes in class, pretending that they form cool shapes. People sometimes assume that the occasional blobs of ink on the print issue of Zephyrus are mistakes, but they are in fact some of Sarah's best pieces, placed haphazardly on pages. Best known for her love of all things dinosaur, Sarah is also a world-renowned chocoholic. She can frequently be heard proclaiming such insightful things as "I really want a brownie" or "I really want M&Ms." Not one to discriminate, Sarah is open to many foods lacking in cocoa. When she was a child, her parents warned her that she might turn into a noodle due to all of the pasta she ate. Now, Chipotle accounts for roughly 43% of her expenditures and 38% of her weight. When she isn’t eating or shamelessly promoting Zephyrus, Sarah is usually in her Undisclosed Location, which may or may not be the same place Dick Cheney hid from 2001-2003.
