After an initial rejection to staff, and Zephyrus finally recognized Maggie Salmen’s immensely humorous self, bringing her senior year to a close. Though she only spent one year in Zephyrus, Maggie’s hot takes (ask her about the smell and feel of news print) and political connections have elevated the pubs room.
Maggie has always had an interest in Zephyrus and thought that it would be a good fit for her. “I like writing just for fun, and I am naturally kind of curious and interested, so I thought that this would be a good place for that. Also all my friends were having fun here too,” Maggie said.
Maggie gained many great memories in Zephyrus, but one of her favorites was attending a Professional Women’s Hockey League game to get interviews for an article on women’s hockey. “It was so cool to sit in the press box and get to ask players questions after the game,” Maggie said.
When asked about her dreams growing up, Maggie said she wanted to be a writer for Saturday Night Live. When asked about her favorite movie, she said, “For old times’ sake, I feel like it’s ‘The Sound of Music.’”
Besides being a writer, Maggie is involved in numerous extracurricular activities at Edina. She is part of the Synchronized Swimming Team, plays trumpet in the Edina High School Concert Band, participates in the Legislative Action Committee, and is the leader of Students Demand Action.
When reflecting on her time in Zephyrus, Maggie looks back fondly and talks about all of the experience she has gained throughout the year. “I’ve loved all the new things I’ve gotten to learn about through all the articles I’ve written. I feel like I’ve gained a lot of knowledge that I wouldn’t have known otherwise.”
After high school, Maggie’s next step is to attend Connecticut College in the fall. Her major is undecided, with an interest in American Studies.
Though Maggie’s time on Zephyrus was brief, we will miss seeing her aesthetically-decorated backpack as she walks out of the room everyday.
