Christmas markets in the Twin Cities have opened for the season, drawing steady attendance from residents looking for accessible community events and opportunities to support local businesses. From the Minnesota Merry Market to the European Christmas Market and the local love market on 50th & France, locals have a variety of opportunities to join in on the holiday festivities this month.
“We’re looking forward to inviting people back out,” Nicole Showalter said, events manager for the Minnesota Merry Market in Saint Paul. “[The market] is a great opportunity to come in and meet artists that are in your neighborhood, reinvest your money in the local creative community, and feel good about where you purchase.”
These markets, open during the month of December, display assorted gifts from local artisans and food from restaurants and small businesses in the area. Visitors have the opportunity to shop locally for their loved ones and participate in festive holiday activities.
“I went to a [Christmas market] last year, and I grew up going to them every year as a kid,” junior Julie Hopf said. “We would all go together and get our favorite Christmas market stuff. [My favorite part] is always… seeing local communities and the things they have made.”
“It’s such a fun time to see kids enjoying the holiday spirit, seeing Santa and that little bit of holiday magic,” Showalter said. “It’s a nice way to… get something to give to their loved ones or to themselves.”
For those looking to visit a market before the end of the holiday season, the Minneapolis Chriskindl Market, Merry Market and European Christmas Market will remain open through late December. All three also offer free admission for visitors.
“Just check it out, soak in some fun,” Shoewalter said. “It’s a nice opportunity to bring the community together by way of the arts.”
