Two weeks ago, the Fillmore hosted Edina High School’s annual Sweethearts Dance with bright pink and red attire and decor.
The Thursday prior to this dance was the coronation, in which seniors Chloe Smith and Felipe Vasconcelos were crowned Sweethearts royalty.
“It felt very shocking because I don’t think anyone expects it to be them, and you’re standing there after you do your dance; it’s all going very fast. My mouth was completely open. The first emotions are just shock and excitement,” Smith said.
Smith and Vasconcelos said that the titles felt rewarding as a product of voting across all grades.
“Being someone who people see as someone who can represent their grade is something special,” Vasconcelos said.
During the dance, Vasconcelos and Smith both recalled the snacks and the music, saying that the night was very fun. There were a variety of cookies, a DJ who was well-liked among students, and opportunities to connect with other students.
“This is my first year going to Sweethearts,” Vasconcelos said. “I got to have a few of the snacks that they had there, which was nice. It was a good little break in between all the party busing and everything else. I got to dance around with a few of my friends, and the music was good. It was a good time.”
