Ultimate Frisbee? More like Ultimate Fruit!

A group of EHS juniors have come together to put their own twist on a classic sport.

Ultimate Fruit players pose for a picture.

The game: simple. The objective: awesomeness. At least that’s how Edina High School junior Anna Belle Albitz and her friends describe the new game they invented called Ultimate Fruit. What seems like a simple game, Ultimate Frisbee with fruit, might in fact be some of the most fun you’ll ever have.

If you think this game comes without strategy, think again. Only a fool goes into a game of Ultimate Fruit without a game plan. Ultimate Fruit is a strategic masterpiece only to be played by the bravest of competitors. Competitors risk stains, self esteem, their beloved fruit, and respect. “Don’t wear your favorite shirt due to the moist and supple nature of the fruits most commonly used or prepare to get new clothes,” warned Albitz.

For the more daring of players, extra risk can be added with the use of acidic fruit such as  lemons. “Beware the stinging citrus of the lemons, eye protection may be wise,” said Albitz from past experience.

The play of the game always depends on the type of fruit played with. For messier results, pick softer fruit such as pluots, or ripe cantaloupes. Limes are not recommended due to their unlikeliness to break. For extra risk, cut slits or holes in the fruit making them more susceptible to breaking. For a longer game use watermelon. Beginners are recommended simple fruits such as apples or oranges. However, some fruits such as the pineapple can be very dangerous. “The pineapple hurts. It hurts so much,” said traumatized EHS junior Caroline Hogan after attempting the foolish endeavor of using a pineapple.

While this game may seem extremely serious to the onlooker, Albitz guarantees that it is a worthwhile use of time. A fruit fight at the end is almost guaranteed. “The game usually concludes with a fruit fight utilizing the scraps left of the field,” said Albitz. Fellow player and EHS junior Shannon Petersen recalled some of her best memories with Ultimate Fruit, “It was super fun to throw fruit I have never heard of at people, and sometimes when you threw the fruit at them it would splatter all over the place. It was fun to see everyone covered in fruit juices.”

Just remember, Ultimate Fruit is just a game but can get extremely competitive. “Gretchen [Miller] smashed a lemon in my face. That was not cool,” said fellow game player and EHS junior Mikkel Undlin. “Contrary to popular opinion, I am not a monster… just really competitive,” responded EHS sophomore Gretchen Miller. Just a warning: friendships may or may not be broken by this game. Ultimate Fruit is a new game that is looking to become the next big thing at Edina. But just remember, play at your own risk. Ultimate Fruit is a game of skill, prestige and most importantly: fruit.
