In his first two months as assistant principal at Edina High School, William Britt has been working on connecting with students and staff to create a better school environment.
Zephyrus: What are some of the school policy changes you’ve implemented so far?
William Britt: I changed advisory. I wanted staff to know they play a huge role in making a welcoming environment for students, and with that, they have responsibilities to make it be a place that students want to attend. For example, we had the handbook quiz, and the winning advisory got good snacks.
Z.: When previously interviewed for Zephyrus, you acknowledged your intent to interview students, parents, and staff to talk about issues within the district you could help solve. Did you do that? What did you find out?
W.B.: I met with a couple seniors who did not receive a parking permit, so I got to hear their frustrations and what they thought could alleviate the issues. I’m working on potential solutions to parking at the high school. We have more cars than spots, and we don’t have anywhere else to build. Mr. Paetzel and I will also be doing some empathy interviews, just to understand students’ perspectives about their experience here.
Z.: Have you had a favorite moment at EHS so far?
W.B.: I think my favorite moment was to see Get Connected Day in action. Students give me energy, so it was nice to have students and families in the building and see smiling faces.
