A coalition of advocacy organizations organized a structured “ICE Out For Good” protest in St. Louis Park last Saturday. The protest was a part of their “ICE Out For Good Weekend of Action,” a series of protests happening in different locations nationwide. The St. Louis Park protest was organized by volunteers for the mass coalition organization Indivisible, a movement that organizes and plans protests against the Trump administration.
Eric Ziegler, a protester who held a cardboard sign saying “ICE OUT,” participated in the protest because of the agency’s growing presence.
“I think ICE is causing more problems than they’re curing,” Ziegler said.
Some of the protesters didn’t plan to be at the event. Autumn Yelich saw the protest while driving and joined in support of the cause.
“I truly have nothing better to be doing because this is one of the most important things, to just be out here and be with your community,” Yelich said. “I may not have a sign or have any say in much, but at least being a body out here and showing support, I know, is very important.”
Multiple protests in the Twin Cities are already planned for next week, including a rally in Edina on Monday, Jan. 12.
“People need to be the change,” Mary Shimshock, a member of Ziegler’s group, said. “If they see something wrong, they have to call it out and be the change and support democracy. For a better world, for [the younger] generation, for our generation, for everyone.”
