Fire Station 2 in Edina will have finished construction and be fully staffed by Oct. 30, Edina Fire Chief Andrew Slama said.
In the past six years, Edina worked on relocating Fire Station 2. The original station 2 ran for nearly 30 years, but the Fire Department wasn’t able to fulfill its duties in controlling its response area according to a 2019 land survey; hence, the station’s movement.
“In 2022, we discussed site selection with [the Edina] City Council, and then in 2023, we discussed the actual project and construction. Throughout 2022, after we identified and purchased the site, [we] began the process of construction and design. That was just throughout the next few years,” Slama said.
The site selection was especially significant, given that Edina had to change its zoning laws for the relocation. Edina Community Development Director Cary Teague said that their prospective locations fell in either residential or office industrial districts, meaning the station would be a disallowed use in the district.
“[Edina] did a survey of other cities to find out if these types of facilities are located in other cities within their industrial parks,” Teague said. “And we found that every city within the surrounding area, with the exception of Richfield, allowed these types of uses in those zoning districts.”
After finalizing the location at 4401 W. 76th St., the city and Fire Department decided on building design and amenities. While the location and size of the building was based on the location survey, significant emphasis was put on community and staff feedback, especially after a negative reception from local residents when the project was first announced.
“Taking all that feedback and seeing it come to life has been really impressive,” Teague said. “We’re seeing a lot of feedback from staff just about the amenities the building has [and] the training components built in there.”
As the development ends, the Edina Fire Department will host a Grand Open House for Fire Station 2 on Oct. 30.
