Authors

Yesterday was a cool day for me. I interacted with two authors.

To kick off the day, Breakfast Book Club and I got the opportunity to Skype with Robin Sloan, the writer of “Mr. Penumbra’s 24 Hour Bookstore,” which is about a quirky quest with secretive elderly men, ancient book societies, and crazy codes that only some can crack. It’s also about the conflict between the old school ways of doing things vs. technology. Sloan described it as, “the war between analog and digital,” but he believes they can live in harmony, and that no one needs to choose a side.

Sloan was a hilarious, down to earth dude, who sipped coffee while being witty even though it was around 6 a.m. for him in California. He answered every question we threw his way with ease and the occasional-pause-“that’s a great question,”-then-answer response. All in all, I had a great time, and I loved listening to the author of a great novel talk to me about everyday things. It was the perfect way to start my Thursday.

This is where I should probably let you know that I love funny people. I do. I love the people that can just talk and be themselves and it’s funny. It’s just such a magical thing and I applaud everyone who is that way.

I also attended a talk given by Heather Terrell. (See the joint article I wrote with Patricia Leach to hear about that experience.)

Talking to authors today inspired me more than I was expecting. I definitely would love to write books some day, and maybe even make a career out of writing (weird that I’m on the newspaper, right?). It makes me feel like I can do anything when I hear about people who were just livin’ their lives and things just worked out and they became famous for doing something they loved.

Sarah says do what you love because eventually, everything works out the way it’s supposed to.
