With the end of the school year approaching, the Zephyrus multimedia team will lose one of our most valuable assets: Malak Alkhatib. Serving as the social media editor during the 2023-24 school year, Malak was the backbone of Zephyrus’s social media presence. Whether it be Zephyrus’s Instagram, TikTok, or Twitter, Malak contributed to and enlivened a variety of pieces.
When entering the pubs room, Malak is one of the first people you hear. Her loud and outgoing personality makes for great conversation, and, for those who prefer to sit back and watch the chaos unfold, entertainment. In addition to her normal duties as the social media editor, Malak maintained the Zephyrus close friends story on Instagram, which was a prime example of her dedication to the publication.
If you happen to have green peppers, never offer one to or get within close proximity of Malak. “They’re grody and nasty,” Malak said. Slow walkers are a major pet peeve of hers, so get out of the way when you see her coming in the hallway.
Malak joined Zephyrus as a photographer but later joined the multimedia team. A line in her staff bio, “The camera sees everything. Watch out,” illustrates her passion for photography, which she believes she is “pretty good” at. During all her years on staff, her favorite part of the publication was Snack Friday, especially during her senior year. “It’s like a victory was won every time I [passed] by an [under]classman and I [got] my snack first,” Malak said.
Malak’s biggest strength in life is eating brunch, which is an essential skill for her to carry out her ideal day of waking up at 10 a.m. and going straight to Perkins Restaurant & Bakery to order mozzarella sticks—all without any judgment from other staff members. Out of every celebrity that exists, she said that she would most want to be friends with Ryan Reynolds.
Malak has “no idea what [she] wants to do,” but is interested in guiding others through science. Malak plans to attend the University of Minnesota for “perchance, maybe biology.”
