“I love playing with and meeting people from the other schools.” said junior Zack Minn.
For many students, participating in after school activities while in high school is a big part of their life. A sport is an activity, whether it be intramural level or varsity. Sports are an outlet for our energies, a place to meet new friends, experience the highs and lows of competition, and learn how to handle different situations. For the students enrolled in special education, it is no different.
Many of our special education students at Edina High School compete in a league designed to fit their needs. Students can join this league as early as seventh grade and continue in it until they graduate. “They are able to participate like typical students can,” said Edina’s Adaptive Sports Coordinater, Mrs. Jackie Awsumb.
Edina, Bloomington, Eden Prairie, and Richfield form both the South Suburban Jets and the South Suburban Flyers. These teams are part of the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL), and compete against other teams from around the state. In the fall, students enjoy soccer, in the winter they play floor hockey, and in the spring they have softball. This winter the Flyers were (9-3-1). In past years the Flyers have consistently been one of the top teams to beat.
“Get involved!”one of Edina’s slogans promoted by Dr. Locklear, is intended to be heard by every student in the student body. According to Mrs. Awsumb, “These students are able to meet new friends, and above all be part of the community through sports.”
“All three sports are enjoyable. I like them very much.” said Jets junior floor hockey captain, Zack Minn.
