Edina High School held their annual fall athletic signing for 16 student athletes on Nov. 14. Students signed their commitment to 12 universities with Division I to Division II athletics.
Held during flex in the Activity Center, coaches for each respective sport introduced their athlete before delivering a brief speech summarizing their abilities and achievements.
Parents and students attended the ceremony in support of the athletes. For senior Lyric Busby, who plans to attend University of Cincinnati for lacrosse, the attendance of her parents “meant everything.”
“[My parents] were the ones who put all the money into this,” Busby said. “During September, we traveled nine times just for recruiting, and they poured all that money and time in just for me to succeed.”
Other athletic commitments included cross country, golf, hockey, softball, football, and basketball. The congregation of student athletes from a wide set of sports was empowering, according to senior Nora Hannan, who will attend St. Thomas University for hockey.
“It was super fun seeing everyone all together, and seeing how all of us have made our way and created our own path within our sport,” Hannan said.
Assistant Principal and Activities Director Troy Stein organized the ceremony, and will host the coming spring athletic signing.
“It is so difficult to move on from high school and compete in collegiate athletics. There are many sacrifices that are made along the way for students and their families; this is a small ceremony to show our gratitude for their tremendous achievements at EHS,” Stein said.
