On Aug. 24, The Edina Boys’ Cross Country team traveled to Perham, Minn. for the Brave Like Gabe Invitational, winning first place in their opening meet of the season. Individually, senior Jace Haerter led the Edina team with a strong second-place finish. Senior Zach Danielson followed closely in third place, while junior Sander Ohe finished seventh. Senior Kevin Nybeck secured 10th place, and senior Benjamin Boudewyns completed the race in 16th place. Senior Ray Anderson rounded out the top twenty with a 19th-place finish.
The team’s win reflects the hard work and dedication they had put in throughout the summer as they prepared to get back into the competitive mindset. “It couldn’t have gone any better. We put in a ton of work over the summer, running six days a week to stay in shape and prepare for the season ahead,” senior Benjamin Boudewyns said. For Boudewyns, the team’s success so far has been fueled by their dedication and determination. A key part of their focus now is on continuing their winning streak through tougher meets, like the Roy Griak Invitational and the Sections Championships. “We’re aiming high this season, with the goal of making it to state—and hopefully nationals. We want to keep the momentum going and secure even more victories in the coming months,” Boudewyns said.
“It felt great to be back competing after such a long break. We’ve been putting in around 50 miles a week to get ready for the season, and I’m glad it paid off,” senior Zach Danielson said. He notes that building a strong foundation early in the season has been key as the team prepares for bigger meets down the line. “We’ll start slowing down on mileage soon, but we’ve been focusing a lot on injury prevention, core strength, and weight training to stay strong and healthy,” Danielson said.
For the team, the camaraderie is just as important as the results. Senior Ray Anderson credits the team’s daily practices not only for their athletic progress but also for creating lasting friendships that push them to improve together. “The bond we have on this team is something special. Every day is a physical and mental challenge, but being with my teammates makes it all fun,” Anderson said.
