Dubai chocolate and dirty soda are a couple of the many food trends that have taken over Edina High School students’ TikTok For You Pages (FYP). These treats used to be inaccessible for EHS students as they weren’t commonly sold in the Twin Cities, but as of late, many more trendy food restaurants and cafes have popped up around Edina.
Sota, based in Maple Grove, sells dirty sodas, a beverage consisting of your choice of soda and mix-ins. Common mix-ins include creamer, syrup, or juice. Senior Josie Murphy visited Sota and ordered the Regulator, which contains Diet Coke with cream and cherry purée. “It was really good, and it was really cheap,” she said.
Senior Ingrid Mrachek also visited Sota and was pleasantly surprised. “I didn’t expect it to be as good as it was,” she said. “ The prices were really good; the one I got was five dollars for the biggest size.” Both seniors were satisfied with their purchases and felt it lived up to the hype after seeing it blow up on their FYPs.
20 minutes away, in Columbia Heights, coffee shop The Golden Nuts has gained traction for their viral Dubai chocolate. Dubai chocolate is a global sensation that has taken over social media. This dessert is made from a knafeh, an Arabic dough dessert, and pistachio filling inside of a chocolate bar.
Senior Meg Curti braved the lengthy drive to get her hands on the highly coveted treat. “It was honestly so good. I was expecting that I wouldn’t like it,” she said.
She was also impressed by the affordable cost. “It was 12 dollars for two [Dubai chocolates]. When things go viral, they get more expensive, but to me that’s cheap for a big chocolate.”
Although these food trends may not be the most convenient for EHS students, the delightful flavours and affordable prices make up for the distance. “It’s like a half-hour drive, but it’s totally worth it,” Curti said.
