Edina Girls Athletic Association (EGAA) has been running girls’ flag football since 1995, and recently the board that approves intramural sports of Edina voted it as an independent club sport at Edina High School for the spring of 2026.
Tryouts at EHS for flag football begin on March 1 and March 8 this year, with Jason Potts as the head coach alongside Brad Dahlman. This year the program is hoping for both a Junior Varsity (JV) and Varsity team. A clinic will start on Feb. 17 before tryouts, the first game is scheduled on April 26, and the schedule ends on May 24. As of Feb. 5, 14 girls have registered so far, and the organization wants to get it up to about 30.
“I became interested in flag football because my daughter loves to play, and I would say in the next couple of years, it will probably be an official Minnesota state sport, so it’s fun to get in on the beginning of that,” EGAA Co-President Megan Sweeney said. Sweeney joined the board three years ago.
This spring marks Potts’s first year of coaching girls’ flag football.
“I’m the head football coach for the boys, and I love football, so I thought it would be fun to keep coaching [it],” Potts said. “I also have two young daughters in second and fourth grade, and so I love girls’ sports.”
Potts said he is determined to create an equal space for the girls’ flag football team and create just as many opportunities as the boys’ football team obtains.
“We’ve got great practice spaces coming up, and using the resources that I’ve created in the last six years as being the boys’ coach has helped out [with] organizing and getting resources for the girls,” Potts said. “I’m looking forward to getting more sponsorships for the boys’ football, getting the same for the girls, [and] the same equipment and the same style jerseys. Using the experiences in the boys’ program and then using it with the girls’ is something that has been going well for us.”
