Edina Sophomore basketball player Erik Veker said, “Rubio is a young developing player with a screwed on head and the right attitude. He is looking at a very bright, successful future.”
Drafted in 2009, 21 year old Ricky Rubio is changing the game. Unlike Lebron James or Kobe Bryant, this young star does not score tons of points. With only an 11 point per game average, he brings a new spice to the game. His many trick plays, and his art of passing are bringing attention to an uncommon style of play.
Ricky Rubio has always set the bar high for himself, always stepping up to the next level. He made his professional debut at the age of 14 with DKV Joventut in the ACB league in Spain, bringing in crowds to watch his ball movement in professional leagues across seas. In 2009, Rubio was drafted fifth over all by the Minnesota Timberwolves. When drafted, Rubio decided to take his game overseas for a few more years, and as a result, he was questioned in toughness and competitiveness, as European players tend to use creativity on the court over structured plays and brute force. Basketball critics thought that he was too young, and not the stereotypical tough American Basketball player. He has proven them wrong, showing his competitive spirit out on the court.
Critics are quieting after Rubio’s amazing passes as they are much like the plays by Hall of Fame superstar Magic Johnson. Although Rubio has not led the Wolves onto many victories with the season start of 8-10, fans are beginning to cheer the Wolves on. Plays like Rubio’s are making fans happy and are changing the perspective of the game. The Wolves are not winning every night, but the excitement is at max level.
