The Edina High School March Madness event occurred in April in the Activity Center. The event spanned two hours from 3:30–5:30 p.m. after school, and both teachers and students were encouraged to participate.
In preparation for the event, the Student Council worked to create promotions such as TikToks, video skits, Instagram reels, and infographics to get the student body engaged and excited about March Madness. Planning for the event also included collaboration and coordination with custodial staff and gym teachers in order to ensure that games ran smoothly.
Similarly to the collegiate March Madness, the teams competed in a bracket format and advanced through the bracket as the games progressed.
Junior Rose Downey is a third-year member of the Student Council and was part of the March Madness planning committee this year. “I know people really enjoyed the [March Madness] event last year, so I wanted to be a part of helping create the event and make it happen this year,” she said.
This year, there were three total teams who competed in the event: two student teams and one teacher team. The championship game was Teachers v. Students, and the teachers, Pierre Schmidt, Matthew Minowitz, Ronald Jenkins, Thomas Piersma, and Jared Thompson, took home first place. “The last game was really fun to watch because both teams were very into it. It really came down to the last few minutes [of the game] because the score was really close,” Downey said.
After the final game, everyone celebrated with cupcakes. “It was a really fun experience and I think the teams had a really fun time… and overall just want to play for fun and have a good time,” she said.
