If you’re looking for one of Zephyrus’ most talented members, look no further, because Sports & Activities section editor Whitney Horton does it all. Whether she’s captaining the Girls’ Hockey team or volunteering at Fairview Southdale Hospital, Whitney is always trying to get involved.
Ever since two Zephyrus members came into her English class freshman year, Whitney knew she had to join. “I didn’t actually think I’d get in because I thought my application was really bad,” she said.
The publication is grateful she did because she’s one of the best-fitted Sports & Activities editors Zephyrus has ever had. Being a dual sport athlete—both hockey and track and field—she has connections across all of Edina High School’s athletic community.
Next year, she plans to play hockey at the University of St. Thomas Academy, majoring in business.
Zephyrus has taught her a lot of things she’s excited to implement in the future. She’s learned to put herself out there, no matter who she might be looking for. Whether it be a politician or a fellow student, Whitney has been able to meet new people, learn about new topics, and get out of her comfort zone. “Just learning to put yourself out there and talk to people you never really thought you would talk to; that’s been pretty eye opening.”
With senior year coming to an end, Whitney is willing to admit she’s been tainted by a bit of senioritis. “I’d probably say that [the hardest part of Zephyrus] is that it’s the seventh period because by the time I get to [Zephyrus], I’m definitely done with the day and [I] just want to go home. I have to push through and force myself to get through one more class,” Whitney said.
It’s hard for Whitney to choose a specific memory as her favorite, but some of her favorite moments with Zephyrus were spent with her tablemates. “My favorite moments were watching Devarsh [when] he would try to be the business manager and just throw a bunch of Oreos on the table. [That was] fun,” Whitney said.
Through her last three years on staff, Whitney has definitely made a tangible difference through her editing, high spirits, and hard work that she bought in every single day. It’s a crime that next year’s staff will have missed out on the GOAT of sports and activities.
