Edina High School is home to many creative minds, whether they are painters, poets, or another type of artist. The Images Club aims to capture this creativity and compile it together into one journal, displaying the vibrant and diverse art that is created by the EHS student body. “Our mission [with] Images is [to get] creative, diverse art out into the community through publishing [in] our literary magazine,” Images Editor Samya Yusuf said.
Over the last 50 years, Images has had a presence in Edina, leading to their recognition by the National Scholastic Press Organization. “The magazine’s longevity is attributed to Images becoming an NSPA Pacemaker Top 100,” Images Advisor Kari Discher said. The Pacemaker Award is described by the NSPA to be the “preeminent” award that the organization grants to yearbooks, magazines, and broadcasts. “The Pacemaker really represents the best of the best and it is appropriate that we recognize the rich tradition this award has in scholastic journalism,” Gary Lundgren said in an NSPA interview.
Images’ time at Edina has allowed it to build connections within the community, leaving a lasting impact on EHS. “This long-lasting connection with our community displays the impact Images has had on our community,” Images Editor Ibtihal Ali said.
As time has progressed, Images continues to receive a diverse variety of art in their submissions, which serves to broaden their magazine’s audience. “Last year we received a digital rendering of Valley View [Middle School] and Edina High School in Minecraft. This shows that the more submissions we receive and the more students participate, the more representation we can provide to the community,” Ali said. As Images receives all forms of art, including music, editors have been required to get creative with how they include digital items in a printed magazine. “We [have] to include stuff like lyrics since we can’t put music into a magazine,” Images Editor Hafsa Farah said.
Images relies on submissions from students to make their magazine what it is. Those who are interested in submitting their art to Images can find posters around the school with a QR code for their submission form.
