Cheap, relatable, and modern humor, the type used by the countless Twitter pages here at Edina High School. Regardless of whether it’s at the expense of a classmate, a teacher, or the integrity of the opposite gender, things to be made fun of are in no short supply, and demand certainly isn’t suffering.
“Bad Luck Edina” is one of the most popular Edina pages. The page’s creator stated, “Tries to get a burrito in the lunch line. Cut-off by a Somalian.” This tweet obviously refers to a comedic aspect of the lunch line system. At the same time, it apparently needs to state the ethnicity of the person in question. The tweet is saying that it’s an injustice that someone different than you is taking your food. The person behind this tweet responded to us in a Twitter message, stating that “It’s all in good fun”. Though most of their tweets aren’t meant to cause harm, in essence they aren’t exactly moral. They also said they are a senior, sticking with the anonymous charade.
Not all people feel this way. As sophomore Will Kerwin puts it, “The Edina Twitter pages are all in good fun. It’s nice to have a funny account that people around here can really relate to and enjoy.” In the busy Edina lifestyle, it’s nice to sit back and have a laugh every once in a while. It doesn’t really matter who it’s at the expense of. The expense isn’t all that much, and no one takes it personally.
Though some people may laugh at the page, when you are joking about an entire group of people, you can’t say everyone is laughing with you. It can still be hurtful to some of the members of that racial or social group. Laughing at them might seem harmless to you sitting at home on the computer, but some things can’t be taken this lightly.
Our city has a good reputation, one that can be easily soiled by these pages. There are exceptions, but we need to uphold a reputation of a city in which we don’t sit around bullying each other.
