In 2024, Taylor Swift was inescapable. Her face dominated news outlets while her record-breaking Eras Tour raked in billions of dollars. When paired with Super Bowl-winning boyfriend Travis Kelce, she became unstoppable. But now that the tour is over, people are finding it harder and harder to stomach Swift, evidenced by a sharp increase in online hate and football fans booing her at the recent Super Bowl. Without the glamour of the global tour, Swift has to find new means to stay relevant to the public, whether it be through completing musical obligations or a shift in career trajectory.
Instead of focusing on music, Swift could join the likes of David Bowie and Madonna by transitioning to film. Swift has already led many directing projects with “All Too Well: The Short Film” and the Grammy-nominated “Fortnight” music video. She hinted at a full-length directorial debut in 2022 when she sold a script to Searchlight Pictures. Transitioning to a different media could be a perfect way for her to express her creativity while further exploring an industry she has already taken interest in.
Another alternative is continuing with music. Fans have been patiently awaiting the re-release of her sixth studio album “Reputation,” which she has been teasing since early last year. While a re-recording would draw fans back in, from a long term standpoint, it is only more of the same for Swift, further saturating the music industry with her ever-present vocals. A smarter angle would be to continue teasing the album well into 2025, allowing fans and the industry to recover from her previous albums.
A third possibility for Swift is to release a book. This could be a strategic move, considering the descriptive writing that dominated her 2024 album, “The Tortured Poets Department.” A collection of poetry, short stories, or a memoir would captivate investigative fans while acting as an ideal outlet for Swift’s poetic side. A book also can’t proliferate itself online the same way music can, giving haters a break.
Whatever Swift decides to do next, her more than loyal fanbase will be sure to follow her.
