At Edina High School, Friday, Feb. 14 was a day filled with sweet candy, the color pink, and flowers. Whether or not you had a special someone to celebrate this Valentine’s Day with, you could tell love was in the air through the crowded halls of EHS.
Senior Kate Maloney celebrated Valentine’s with classmates. “In my French class, we did a candy exchange, and that was fun and festive. [The exchange] was like what we used to do in elementary school; I decorated my bag with my name and hearts,” she said.
Maloney also sported Valentine’s Day colors at school by wearing pink. “At school, a bunch of people wore holiday colors like red and pink, which was cool to see because I feel like that’s something that we would do when we were younger. It was nice to see people still dressing up for a non-major holiday,” she said.
Holiday celebrations also extended to friends, family, and loved ones.
For senior Bergen Pickett, celebrating “Galentine’s,” a day where women typically gather to celebrate their friendship the day before Valentine’s Day, with friends, was as sweet as ever. “It was really fun to have a day to do everything cute and fancy; it just felt special. I felt like [my friends and I] were getting closer and doing things that we’d always wanted to do, but never got the chance to, so it was just the perfect day,” Pickett said.
Pickett exchanged gifts with her boyfriend on Friday after a viewing of the film “Sixteen Candles.” “I made a whole bouquet of ribbon roses and gave chocolate, and [my boyfriend] got me a basket of chocolates and sweets,” she said. Maloney also received traditional Valentine’s Day gifts from her parents. “My mom got me one of my favorite things to get on Valentine’s Day; a Jellycat stuffed animal. The theme of the gifts I got were candy, stuffed animals, and flowers; very Valentine’s Day-esque,” Maloney said.
