Many “outies” tuned in for the season two finale of Apple TV+ thriller “Severance” last Thursday, which sparked lots of hullabaloo surrounding the cliffhanger ending. The 10th and final episode of the season took a similar pace to the season one ending, throwing viewers into where the penultimate episode left off, and in typical “Severance” fashion, had viewers pacing around the room out of confusion and anticipation of the episode’s events.
Though the show has been hailed as one of the best shows on TV right now, a major criticism of “Severance” has been the production time, with viewers waiting almost three years for season two. This was credited to some production issues, including conflicts between showrunners and the SAG-AFTRA and Writers Guild of America strike lasting from July-November, 2023. But luckily for fans, the show has already been renewed for a third season, with producer and director Ben Stiller stating “the plan is not, definitely not” for production to take another three years, leaving the audience cliff-hanging.
“I thought that the finale was satisfying until the very end, and then I was left deeply unsatisfied and befuddled,” senior Abby Miller said after the thrilling ending.
Some believed season two of “Severance” was too slow-paced and quirky, but many viewers enjoyed the slow-burn fleshing out of characters. “I loved the episode [about] Gemma. That episode was so good. And even the one where Ms. Cobel goes to the harbor town—I liked it,” Miller said.
But with the expanded understanding of some characters, other viewers felt season two lacked answers to core questions of the confusing elements of the show. “I think that the show is really well done, however, I think they need to answer some more questions [that the audience have] in order to make it more compelling for the viewer. [The show] needs to reward us with a little something, y’know?” senior Rose Davis said.
However, this plethora of unanswered questions opens up the floor for fan theorists to deconstruct each scene for clues. This season, fan theorists correctly predicted that Helly was temporarily replaced on the severed floor by her “outie” Helena after the first episode aired, when the reveal did not occur until episode four.
“I thought that season two was more engaging than season one. Season one I was bored a lot of the time and felt like it lagged a lot of the time, in my opinion, but season two I feel like I was locked in,” Miller said. “I just really wanted to know what was gonna happen next.”
