Although juggling multiple extracurriculars can be difficult, sophomore Pranika Kumar excels with her packed schedule. She participates in speech, debate, Model UN, DECA, band, and taekwondo.
Kumar has had many achievements, notably winning state in DECA, qualifying for National Speech and Debate Association Nationals, winning second at the Minnesota State High School League State Debate Tournament, and reaching the semifinals at the Debate Tournament of Champions. “I joined [debate] because it looked fun in Disney shows,” she said. “I had no idea of what it entailed until I actually got into it. I ended up enjoying it though once I got through the process.”
Pranika does congressional debate, a modern form during which debaters simulate lawmaking and give speeches on bills. “I joined [public forum] in the beginning,” she said, “but then I got scared so I went to congress.” Amidst her many activities, she keeps a healthy work-life balance by keeping organized and managing her schedule. “I time-block my schedule and keep a max to the extracurriculars because it’s easy, especially with debate research, to spend as much time working as you can,” she said. “I make sure that I keep time for schoolwork as well as other hobbies, self-care, friends, and family.” In the future, Kumar hopes to pursue a career in medicine (specifically neurology and oncology) or law.
