The real luxury in Hollywood isn’t lavish weddings. It’s keeping them off Instagram. When it comes to personal privacy for celebrities, there’s hardly ever any consideration or respect, even though privacy is a human right that is applicable to even the famous and wealthy. Increasingly, celebrities have been gravitating towards concealed weddings, where venues, dates, and even the marriage itself aren’t revealed publicly. Private weddings are beneficial for celebrities as they provide peaceful ceremonies and can also keep a spouse out of unwanted attention.
Celebrity weddings can get hectic when they draw the public’s eye, especially attracting paparazzi and news sources that can profit from them. With publicly known wedding dates, fans and paparazzi are more likely to storm the venue and try to get as many glimpses of the celebrities as possible. An example of a very public wedding was that of Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez, when the billionaire and his wife rented most of the San Giorgio Maggiore island in Venice, Italy. They invited major celebrities, such as the Kardashians, Jenners, and Sydney Sweeney. Sanchez also posed for the cover of Vogue in her wedding dress. Paparazzi were present at almost every point of the ceremony, snapping covers for magazines, social media posts, and more. Conducting a ceremony in secrecy provides protection from prying eyes, giving celebrities a peaceful wedding centered around what matters: family, friends, and their spouse.
As for respecting spouses’ wishes against the spotlight, private weddings are the way to go. Lana Del Rey married an alligator tour guide in September 2024, and keeping the relationship private, they had a peaceful wedding ceremony on a Louisiana bayou with only a few family members. Additionally, Jennifer Lawrence married art gallery director Cooke Maroney in 2019 at the private venue Belcourt of Newport. Though Lawrence and Maroney have been seen publicly at events together, he keeps out of the spotlight, which was aided by the lack of harassment and photographs from paparazzi of him during the ceremony.
With their carefully inspected lives, privacy is rare for celebrities. Private celebrity marriages benefit mental health and can keep spouses out of the public eye.
