In recent years, singers like Sabrina Carpenter, Olivia Rodrigo, and Tate McRae have emerged as the world’s biggest pop stars. So what defines this new generation of musical icons? All three singers have recently gone on tours, and their performances each display a clear connection. Throughout their careers, these artists have made their mark on the music industry and pop culture with bold fashion choices, shows with strong emphasis on aesthetics, and gaining fame at a young age.
“Pop music has become universal for a lot of people, and lots of artists are working together,” freshman Selena Al-Ramahi said. “They’re all connected through this community.”
Artist Sabrina Carpenter has been touring the U.S. to promote her sixth album, “Short n’ Sweet,” repeatedly selling out venues. However, she didn’t achieve her success overnight. At the start of her career, Carpenter worked not as a musician but as an actor, starring in the Disney Channel original series “Girl Meets World,” and it was later that she showcased her musical talent with her debut album, “Eyes Wide Open.”
Fans have also taken notice of Carpenter’s signature style. “She’s got an amazing brand with her makeup style and curtain bangs, especially the whole blush trend,” sophomore Alistar Gundberg said. “Especially after ‘Emails I Can’t Send’ and ‘Short n’ Sweet’, her rebranded style with the hearts and the kiss marks has really defined her.”
Similarly, Olivia Rodrigo also grew up in the spotlight, starring in Disney Channel’s “Bizaardvark” when she was just 13 years old. Even her hit single, “drivers license,” was released when she was 17. Rodrigo recently concluded her U.S. leg of the GUTS World Tour, and her wardrobe leaned into her iconic pop-punk style. These outfits ranged from sparkly silver sets and bright red bodysuits to her various tank tops, with a new print for every show. “A lot of her outfits are very iconic, and you can tell it’s her when you see them,” Gundberg said.
Unlike her fellow stars, popular singer Tate McRae went a different route. McRae first gained prominence as a dancer while also posting her original songs on YouTube. Since then, she has rapidly gained fame through her single, “greedy,” which became popular on TikTok. This single later became part of her second studio album, “Think Later.” During her tour, McRae defined her style with oversized hockey jerseys and knee-high boots.
These three artists are just some of the icons that make up today’s pop music scene. With so many child stars growing into singer-songwriters, it ensures them a fan base before establishing themselves as musicians, also allowing them to expand their careers. Becoming famous at a young age gives them the resources needed to create long, successful careers.
