Over the past year, Edina has had a string of high-profile crime events. From the Edina High School school safety threats back in September to the several murders in the Southdale area in December. The most recent of the crimes have targeted homes in affluent neighborhoods.
A communications report released by the City of Edina states that houses are being targeted by one or more organized groups. “It is believed the suspects are not choosing houses at random and are watching them carefully prior to burglarizing them,” Edina detectives and local law enforcement said. “Suspects are stealing jewelry, safes, and high-end merchandise. It’s believed the burglars are not violent and tend to choose unoccupied houses.”
For Edina resident and EHS senior Molly McGrane, the recent break-ins came as a shock. “I was super surprised when I heard about the recent break-ins,” she said. “I have lived here for almost all my life and don’t remember there being much crime until this past year.”
“It was a sort of surreal time,” she said. “It was hard to believe that a break-in actually happened so close to us, and during the day while the whole family was home.”
She noted that the proximity of the police station, located just across the street, has long been seen as a symbol of security. However, recent events have left residents feeling vulnerable. Edina police say they are increasing patrols in target neighborhoods.
Protecting your home
In light of the string of burglaries and with spring and summer around the corner, it is especially important to protect your homes. A 2014 study published by the Bureau of Justice Statistics shows that property crime often increases in the warmer months. Below are some important safety tips from the Edina Police Department:
Install security measures: Invest in security alarms, surveillance cameras, and outdoor lighting systems. Ensure all doors and windows are securely locked before leaving your home.
Stay connected: If possible, have your alarm monitoring company contact police immediately in case of an emergency. Install surveillance cameras that can be monitored through your cell phone for added peace of mind.
Community engagement: Register for the Edina House Watch Request program to notify dispatch when leaving your home for an extended period. Officers will conduct periodic checks on properties to deter suspicious activities. Additionally, inform neighbors when you’ll be away for an extended period.
Participate in the SafeCam program: Register your surveillance cameras with Edina’s SafeCam program. In the event of a crime in your neighborhood, your footage could provide valuable evidence to aid in investigations.
