As the 2024–25 school year comes to a close, so does Olivia Wegmann-Krider’s time on Zephyrus. Though her sunny demeanor will be missed, Zephyrus treasures the three years of photos, smiles, and creativity she’s given us.
Olivia took Digital Photography both semesters of her freshman year and fell in love with the candid nature of photojournalism. She joined Zephyrus her sophomore year to further explore this interest. “[Photography] showed me a lot of things that I never would have seen before,” she said. “For one [Zephyrus] assignment, I had to go to the mayoral candidate forum and learn a little bit about politics. For another one, I had to go to the Asia Mall.”
Throughout her years on Zephyrus, Olivia’s aptitude for photography garnered her many accolades, including recognitions from the National Scholastic Press Association and awards for both photos and page layouts at the Minnesota High School Journalism Convention.
Olivia was chosen for art director her senior year. During her tenure, she prioritized making photography a larger focus of Zephyrus. “I wanted to reshape [the publication] because it was originally very art-centric,” she said. As art director, Olivia also helped train staff, generate art and photography ideas, and design Zephyrus merch.
Outside of her work, Olivia treasures the community she found. One of her core memories is modeling newspaper clothes during Zephyrus bonding. “I don’t actually remember if I was planning this or if it was a spontaneous thing, but when I got to the end of the runway, I ended up ripping off my tear-off newspaper pants,” she said. “I left the building and walked around in my newspaper pants for the rest of the day.”
Outside of Zephyrus, Olivia is an avid tennis player, playing for the high school for four years. She also coaches tennis and takes photos at Fred Wells Tennis & Education Center. She is also the founder and leader of Photography Club and Project Earth at Edina High School.
Next fall, Olivia will attend Claremont McKenna College and plans on studying psychology and economics. She advises younger members of Zephyrus to cherish their passion for journalism—a quality she will continue to embody through college and beyond.
