Plot: An elderly woman listens to the romantic tale of two young lovers as told from a notebook. In the story, a young poor boy falls for a rich girl, as they both attempt to be with another despite their class differences.
Why not to watch with parents: This is the quintessential chick flick. Guys, avoid watching with your mom at all costs unless you want your mom tearing up and getting all emotional on you. Ladies feel free this to watch with your moms, but please spare your fathers.
Awkward scale: zoning out and then realizing you have been staring at someone
Empire
Plot: Andy Warhol’s minimalist masterpiece is made up of an eight hours and five minutes shot of theEmpireStateBuilding. In stunning black and white. Warhol has been quoted as saying that the sheer unwatchability of the film is some of the point.
Why not to watch with parents: Spending eight hours in close quarters with your family is asking for trouble. In addition, if you recommend this film your parents will think you are a filthy, filthy hipster.
Awkward scale: Saying goodbye to someone and then proceeding to walk same direction
Superbad
Plot: The movie chronicles three nerdy seniors who are given an invite to party provided that they can get enough alcohol for everyone. Their plan quickly goes awry and the night turns into one fiasco after the next.
Why not to watch with parents: This movie has everything parents hate. Teenage drinking? Check. Use of alcohol to sleep with girls? Check. Copious swearing? Check. Running from the cops? Check. Making the entire thing look like a ton of fun? Check.
Awkward scale: Middle school
Borat
Plot: A Kazakhstani reporter travels to theUnited Statesto help his government and his people learn more about American culture. He quickly loses sight of this goal though in favor of another one; marrying Pamela Anderson.
Why not to watch with parents: Anti-Semitic language, anti-feminist language, every other form of insulting language, naked men, public sexual acts take your pick.
Awkward scale: Buying condoms and running into to your old babysitter
A Clockwork Orange
Plot: Based on Anthony Burgess’s novel, A Clockwork Orange is widely considered a classic. It depicts the brutal crimes and rehabilitation of Alex, the leader of a gang in a decayingLondon.
Why not to watch with parents: One word: rape. The graphic scenes in this movie could make anyone uneasy, now throw in some parents, and you’ve gone far past just normal awkward.
