Located in the heart of the bustling 50th & France Business District, the Edina Mann Theatre has served as an Edina landmark since its construction in 1934. Its fluorescent marquee, Hollywood-style decor, and mix of blockbusters and indie movies make it one of the city’s most prominent icons.
“It’s unlike any other theater I’ve been to,” sophomore Stella McCall said. “I love all the rooms, and the staff are really friendly.”
One such unique element of the theatre is the Gold Room, which is based on the Art Deco-style bar from “The Shining.” The room was first proposed by Michelle Mann, co-owner of the Edina Mann Theatre and daughter of Steven Mann, the president of Mann Theatres. It features a “REDRUM” door, “The Shining” themed bathrooms, and a large mural of the Shining Twins overlooking the bar area.
“It has been over three years since the renovations, and I still hear people wowing when they come up the escalator and see all of the gold,” Zach Welton, general manager of the Edina Mann Theatre, said.
After a closure during the COVID-19 pandemic, the theatre reopened under Mann Theatres’ new management in 2023, replacing Landmark Theatres’ previous ownership. It has since stayed open despite competition from major chains in the area such as AMC.
Noah Hecker, concessionaire and usher at the theatre, said that customers enjoy the Edina Mann Theatre because “it has more personality.”
“There’s kind of a magic, I feel, at the movie theater,” Hecker said. “The movie just feels more intense, like you get to experience it.”
“Our theater is doing great,” Welton said. “People feel comfortable coming again, and there are plenty of movies every year that they feel are worth coming out to see on a massive screen with amazing sound.”
