Seniors Mickey Stone and Thomas Matthes are student directing this year’s production of Listen to the Images, which will be performed Tuesday in Edina High School’s Black Box theater from 7:30 until 9:00 p.m. Although there is a suggested donation to the EHS Thespian Club, there is no cost for attending the production.
The show is entirely student-run, from the directing to the set design to the lighting and sound. Each scene was written by the students performing it, and was inspired by one of the photographs, poems, short stories, drawings, etc. included in past issues of Images, the EHS literary arts magazine.
“It’s a really interesting way to portray what’s in the Images magazines,” said junior Rachel Thompson, one of the actors in the production. The cast has chosen art pieces of interest from the magazines and “turned them into skits and songs,” said Thompson. Some of the scenes use the exact words of the story or poem they’re based on, while some are loosely based on their Images inspiration.
Audience members can look forward to a diverse set of performances. “[The show] is set up as a radio show,” explained Stone. “All of the different scenes are guests on the radio show. I think it’s entertaining because every scene is so different. It holds your attention.”
The show opens with director Mickey Stone leading the rest of the cast as they portray a children’s choir, and closes with a number showcasing the unique talents of the entire cast. In addition, there will be dance numbers and an appearance by the local band Mtone Sex Explosion.
In comparison to receiving a script and following it closely, as in a traditional EHS Thespian production, this type of show demands a new level of imagination. “It’s been really fun and interesting to work with these people on more of a creative project. Here we get to transform it into our own unique work,” said Thompson.
“It’s a really creative experience,” said Stone.
