Five Unique Holiday Traditions From Around the World

People celebrate the holiday season with many different traditions. There is the classic stockings on the mantle, decorating cookies, and putting up a christmas tree. Yet there are places around the world that celebrate christmas a little differently. Here are five odd Christmas traditions from around the world.

1. Hiding Brooms in Norway

In Norway, Christmas Eve is looked upon with much superstition. It is their belief that it’s the day when evil spirits tease the living. On Christmas Eve, some women hide all the brooms and mops in the house to prevent them from being stolen from witches.

2. Spider Webs in Ukraine

A popular legend in Ukraine speaks of one poor family unable to decorate their tree. The spiders heard their distress, and decorated the family’s tree with their webs during the night. In the morning, the trees webs were magically changed to silver and gold, blessing the family with a new fortune. This tale has inspired many Ukrainians to decorate their trees with fake spider webs during the Christmas season.

3. Kentucky Fried Chicken for Christmas in Japan

Only about one percent of the Japanese population is Christian, but thanks to a successful ad campaign in 1974 called “Kurisumasu ni wa kentakkii!” (Kentucky for Christmas), KFC is the place to go on Dec. 25th. People order their meals far in advance because of this tradition’s huge popularity.

4. Rollerblade to Church in Venezuela

In Caracas, the capital of Venezuela, people rollerblade to the morning mass of church on Christmas Day. The roads are all blocked off before 8 a.m. to allow the rollerbladers to get to church safely. Many open their houses, and supply cookies and hot chocolate to those who pass by.

5. Santa Claus World Championships in Switzerland

In the town of Samnaun, Switzerland, is a competition during Christmas dubbed ClauWau, the Santa Claus World Championships. In this competition, teams from all over meet at a local ski lodge dressed up as Santa Claus. These teams compete in numerous games including snowshoe relay races, a wooden rocking horse obstacle course, sled races, a gingerbread decorating contest, and a chimney climbing race. The winner of this contest gets crowned as the best Santa team.
