Edina High School’s annual Sweethearts dance, which is open to all sophomores and upperclassmen, was held on Feb. 8. As current sophomores were unable to attend last year, this year marked their first opportunity to take part in the event.
Sophomore Luke Sullivan was looking forward to the dance at the Fillmore, as he said he had heard great things about it.
“It definitely lived up to my expectations. It was a great atmosphere and place to have a dance,” Sullivan said. “I think that the best part of the Sweethearts experience was probably just dinner and dancing with your friends or sweetheart. It was just a really fun experience to have fun with some friends in a cool place like the Fillmore.”
Sophomore Miles Anderson said he was excited for his first Sweethearts dance. “I was looking forward to the mosh pit. Also, I had a date, so I wanted to hang out [with her] and dance with friends,” he said.
He also noted that he was pleasantly surprised by how much fun the event was. “It exceeded my expectations because I wasn’t sure that the party would be fun outside of the school. The setting was absolutely amazing, and my group had a lot of fun. I also liked how there were two levels for spectators and dancers,” Anderson said.
Anderson said he strongly recommends the event to future students. “I would definitely recommend going next year for every [current] freshman because the atmosphere is really lively and fun. Even if you don’t have a date, going with friends is always an amazing experience either way,” Anderson said.
Sophomore Alex Russell looked forward to an experience different from Homecoming. “I was looking forward to a fun experience, way different from Homecoming because it’s not as big of a venue,” Russell said.
His favorite part of the event was getting to see familiar faces and having additional activities beyond dancing. “It was really cool to get to see people that you know, and there were other things to do at the venue instead of just dancing. I liked how there was a second floor you could go to and hang out if you didn’t want to dance,” Russell said.
