Starting this year, Edina High School students can utilize the EHS Wellness Center throughout the week under the supervision of GameFace performance coaches before and after school.
GameFace Training is a TRIA-based athletic program focused on science-based strength and agility training for student-athletes. Coaches with expertise in sports performance will be available at EHS to teach students proper weightlifting technique, assist with exercises, and advise students in creating training sessions that meet their goals.
For many students, the GameFace Training partnership has made staying active more accessible. “I’ve been wanting to play basketball and have been looking for a personal trainer, but I couldn’t find one,” freshman Hamza Mohamed said. “Coming to the gym has really helped me…It’s great because I’m able to stay here and work out freely and there are people here to help me and tell me what workouts to do.”
GameFace Training allows students with all experience levels to improve their exercise technique and feel more comfortable in the gym. “It’s a good thing for all athletes, even just regular students,” EHS performance coach Ben Beise said. “They learn how to properly lift and stay fit just to live a longer, healthier life.”
GameFace Training is currently only available in the Wellness Center, but Mohamed would like to see the program expand to other facilities. “I hope they move into the gyms for more basketball, maybe some sports outside like soccer or football,” he said.
Throughout the first weeks of school, Beise and the other performance coaches have assisted many students during their workouts. Beise hopes more students utilize the wellness center in the future. “I hope every team and every student works with us,” he said. We’d love to work with everybody.”
