On Thursday, Sept. 12, lunch at Edina High School was filled with curiosity and excitement as students explored the 2024–25 Activities Fair. The Activities Fair acts as an opportunity for students to learn what clubs and activities are offered at EHS. There were 75 groups in this year’s fair, including 18 brand new ones this year.
With all the new options this year, there was a variety to choose from. New groups this year included the Fishing Club, the Donation Club, the Muslim Student Association, Life as a Hornet, and the Crafts for Cancer Club.
Clubs provide opportunities for students to participate in activities outside the school, such as Letters of Love, which is a preexisting group that meets monthly to write letters to children in hospitals.
“It’s a really great community builder… being able to know that we have some connection to each other by writing these notes to the kids in hospitals really helps us all grow as a community,” Letters of Love co-president and junior Eleanna Yannopoulou said.
Senior Annabelle Duff started Crafts for Cancer, a new club this year, to honor her grandfather who passed away from cancer. Crafts for Cancer makes beaded bracelets that will be sold at a local store called SHOP in the CITY on 50th & France. All of the profits go towards St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and the American Cancer Society. “It’s super easy to make a club… I’ve already gotten to meet a lot of new people,” Duff said. Many groups at EHS bring students together to help the community.
Joining clubs also looks good on college applications. “Participating in extracurricular activities is a key factor in strengthening college applications…Extracurriculars provide opportunities to develop important skills, explore personal interests, and show a balance between academic responsibilities and broader personal development, making applicants stand out in the competitive admissions process,” said University of Minnesota Recruitment Coordinator and Senior Admissions Counselor Nick Hervatin.
