If you’ve walked into the Edina High School art wing in the last few years, there’s a good chance Obi Herold was sitting in class.
“I’ve always loved art — ever since freshman year I’ve taken an art class every single semester,” Obi said. Obi plans on continuing his art education this fall by majoring in art education and potentially minoring in American Sign Language (ASL) at Indiana University of Indianapolis (IUI). “[IUI] has really good art programs so when I toured it [IUI] was really what I was looking for,” Obi said. “It’s pretty niche to find art education as a major, so I kind of narrowed [my options] down anyways.”
Obi credits his experience at EHS for helping him discover an interest in pursuing education. “I’m a teacher’s assistant for my ASL teacher, so getting that experience made me realize that teaching would be a good idea for me because I really do like working with kids,” Obi said.
Over the summer, Obi will continue to work at the Edina Art Center, where he leads art sessions for kids. “Monday through Thursday [this summer] I’ll be doing art camps. Kids will come to Fred Richards Park and then we’ll teach them art,” Obi said. “Kids can show up for free and do three different projects, so I help them out. I really do love it.”
