On Oct. 7, 2024, the Edina School Board began their first meeting of the month. During the meeting, the School Board discussed new graduation requirements proposed at an earlier meeting, the School Board’s priorities for this school year, and a myriad of other discussion and action items.
The proposal for new graduation requirements would be another required social studies course: Personal Finance. Edina High School’s Principal Paul Paetzel, Assistant Principal Jenn Carter, and Jodie De St. Hubert, Director of Teaching & Learning, presented the proposals, as well as data relating to the overall flexibility of EHS schedules.
The recommended course of action by the presenters was to add the Personal Finance requirement while leaving the rest of the credits the same. Additional unofficial ideas discussed were to remove one of two Personal Wellness credits to add Personal Finance, or to add the Personal Finance standards into other required classes.
This agenda item was a discussion proposal and not voted on at this meeting, but will be brought back to the agenda at an upcoming Nov. 19 School Board meeting. During the rest of the agenda items, the School Board:
- Spoke to the EHS Earth Club on a proposal for electric school buses in the district.
- Heard Edina Ed Fund’s report on their past year of work and vision for the upcoming year.
- Discussed the New Early Learning Center’s Executive Director, Lynette Galante, and their goals for improving services in the future.
- Approved a new district Professional Development Day to compensate for new state learning standards and requirements.
- Approved updates to Edina Public Schools policies 603, 616, 618, and 620. The policies were updated for clarity, preciseness, and improved alignment with new federal and state standards.
