Now that the new school year has begun, we can expect to see piles of homework assignments – many of which will have to do with writing. EHS’ own writing center, The Writer’s Block, is a great resource to keep in mind as you navigate through your work.
This year, The Writer’s Block is undergoing some big changes. Senior Coaches Karl Otness and Naomi Reiner have been working on a new website for the writing center that will allow the staff to extend their reach to students. Students will be able to communicate with coaches via Google Docs, which will be convenient for those who don’t have time during the day to visit. The staff hopes that the new website, which will launch by the end of the month, will attract new students to the program.
For many new students, the Writer’s Block is a great way to help with the transition into high school. “Students can get help on any kind of writing they might be doing: English papers, AP History Essays, college essays, your novel, or anything else,” Otness explained.
While the coaches won’t write your essay for you, they will give you helpful knowledge regarding the writing process and will provide support to you throughout the process. As advisors Ms. Mohs and Ms. Cosgrove put it, “We don’t just build better writing, we build better writers.”
The Writer’s Block is open during zero hour and all three lunches, and everybody is welcome to visit. “There is oftentimes the misconception that only bad writers need help with writing, and that is so not the case. Some of the best writers I know hang around the Block, and I even take advantage of my fellow coaches,” said Ballarini.
The Writer’s Block is located in room 263 and managed by English teachers Ms. Cosgrove and Ms. Mohs. Students can either walk in or make an appointment, or meet with a coach via the new website that will be launching soon.

This is a great article, Drew! I think it’s great that you did an article on the Writer’s Block because not very many people know specifically what it is. It could be cool to do a follow-up story once the online coaching begins!
