“I have no doubt that “the Artist” and “Hugo” will be nominated for Best Picture this year,” said English teacher Fred Cheng. It’s getting close to Oscar season, which means it’s a perfect time to make some 2012 Oscar predictions! So sit down with a bag of popcorn, and enjoy quick summaries of this year’s best motion pictures, and what could potentially be the best picture of the year!
1. “The Descendants”
While Matt (George Clooney) copes with the fact that his wife is in a fatal coma, he learns some interesting news that could potentially rip his family apart. Will this Hawaiian father overcome his list of endless problems with the help of his two daughters?
2. “The Artist”
A historical fiction starring Jean Dujardin and Bérénice Bejo, this French silent black-and-white film tells the story of a declining male film star and a rising actress, as silent cinema grows out of fashion and is replaced by the speaking films in early 1930s Hollywood.
3. “Hugo”
This 3D adventure movie is about a boy living alone in the Paris railway station. On a quest, the boy must solve the history of the toymaker working at the station, and the theatrical past he is hiding. With the help of a girl he meets, he uncover mysteries that will leave your jaw dropping repeatedly throughout this movie that is bound to be a classic.
4. “The Help”
In the 1960s in the South, black women have a lot to say. And that’s exactly what Skeeter (Emma Stone), an aspiring writer, lets them do. As she learns about them, she writes a book about their stories of being maids for white families. Unlikely friendships occur throughout this movie set in Jackson, Mississippi. It’s based off of the New York Times’ best selling novel by Kathryn Stockett.
5. “Moneyball”
Brad Pitt stars in this drama based on the true story of the general manager, Billy Beane, of theOakland A’s. With a short budget and a losing record, he has to learn how to organize his team better than the richer teams. When Peter Brand (Seth Rogen) steps in and helps with the rebuilding of the team, changes start to happen for the better. Beane pours his emotion into the team, but is he taking the heart and soul out of the game?
