Skincare has become beloved across the nation recently, targeting young adults and teenagers to use viral products. Some students at Edina High School are spending hundreds of dollars a year to achieve more glowy, smooth, and glossy skin. Many of them are influenced by Get Ready With Me (GRWM) videos on TikTok. GRWMs show the importance of every detail in a skincare routine and the pricey products applied to the skin.
Over the past year, many skincare lovers have been using products from the brand Drunk Elephant. Drunk Elephant is not only used because of its results, but also because of its high quality ingredients. “We are committed to using only ingredients that either directly benefit the health of the skin or support the integrity of our formulations,” they stated in their philosophy. They state that they focus on healthy pH levels and active ingredients that help the skin’s acid mantle. Drunk Elephant’s revenue sky-rocketed as of 2022, reaching 2.4 million dollars. As well as Drunk Elephant, Cerave plays a vital role in skincare, providing different products approved by dermatologists and skin care specialists. “I love Cerave so much, I use one of their cleansers and also the moisturizer. It’s so light and it really moisturizes my skin well,” sophomore Sophia Kerslake said. Cerave claims to be the “number one dermatologist recommended moisturizer brand in the U.S.”
Many students at EHS got polled to explain their skincare routines. “At night I start off by washing my face with a Cetaphil cleanser, then washing my face with a Replenix benzoyl peroxide face wash,” sophomore Maren Farazi said. “I like using those two products because the cleanser helps remove my makeup extremely well and clears my pores. I like the Replenix benzoyl because it helps with acne, and drys my skin well.” Understanding your skin type and texture can ultimately help you decide what product works for you and your skin. “I start out by using the Cerave cleanser and their moisturizer which benefit my skin so much,” sophomore Emmy Inderieden said.
The skincare craze has changed the health of skin, while companies have also been receiving hundreds of thousands in revenue. Students at EHS are impacted by the world of skincare, while showing the direct impact it has had on their skin. While the industry of skincare expands to teens all across the nation, prioritizing not just profit, but the health of students’ skin will keep them hooked for years to come.
