Procrastination Nation: Tumblr

It’s 8:30 p.m. on a Sunday night, and you sit down to do some good old-fashioned homework. You put on your comfy sweats, grab some snacks, maybe put on some tunes, and open your computer to start that long-overdue essay (Passion Project, am I right?!). After you finally type out a laborious thesis, you decide it’s time for a break. Specifically, a much needed Tumblr break.

For those of us lucky enough not to know, Tumblr is a website that encompases almost every possible interest and fandom out there on an endless scroll. You create a blog and then scroll through a ceaseless supply of pictures, videos, GIFs, and text, re-blogging what catches your eye. Sounds pointless and silly… until you sign up.

“I never understood how people spent all day on the computer until I joined Tumblr,” said sophomore Sarah Anderson.

Spending hours on Tumblr is a very easy thing to do because of its endless scroll and its constant refreshing. When someone you follow makes or reblogs a new post, the taunting little red notification pops up on the top of the screen. Furthermore, since scrolling is unlimited, it is impossible to have seen every post, as your dash is bottomless. Scrolling for hours into the deep dark depths of Tumblr is highly probable, especially for the procrastinator in all of us.

Tumblr has a place for every type of blogger. Whether you’re a Harry Potter fan, a Nerdfighter, a pale or grunge blogger, or even a cat-pic fanatic, Tumblr has a place for you.

You can even customize your own blog by setting a background, adding links and music, and uploading photos. For the really tech-savvy, you can create your own code for your blog’s layout. Spending hours coding and customizing is also a very easy way to lose track of time. But, hey – now you have an awesome blog to procrastinate on.

The Tumblr community is a vast and crazy one and once you’re a part of it, it’s almost impossible to leave. So some advice from an avid Tumblr user: don’t leave that Tumblr tab open when there’s homework to be done!
