The Edina High School girls’ swim team continued its strong season with a win at the Section 6AA Championships on Saturday. The team scored 523 points to second place Minnetonka’s 457. Eden Prairie came in in third with 400 points. The team will compete in the State meet this upcoming Friday and Saturday at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center.
The girls started off the meet winning the first three events, including individual wins by seniors Nikki Larson and Maryellen Campbell in the 200 free and 200 individual medley, respectively. Junior Madeleine Eden came in second in the 200 IM, with junior Heather Laedtke and Paige Haller tying for fifth. Larson also won the 100 fly, with Haller coming in third. Freshman Emma Wittmer took third in the 100 free and Eden came in fourth in the 500 free. The team of Amelia Anderson, Wittmer, Campbell, and Larson then set a pool record in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:35.94. Campbell came back two events later to finish second in the 100 breast, just behind freshman Olivia Anderson’s pool record-setting time of 1:04.31.
Unlike other sports where solely the winning team from each section advances to state, swimmers qualify for the championship meet on an individual basis, so state meet rivals will not only include out-of-section opponents Stillwater and Wayzata, but also section rival Minnetonka.
