Senior Katybeth Biewen was born at Fairview Southdale Hospital, and since a young age, has always had a passion for athletics. She has brought this passion to Edina High School today, and is a well-known varsity athlete. When Senior Molly Little was asked last year what question should be added to the yearbook, she remarked, “Is there anything Katybeth Biewen isn’t good at?”
In every sport she has been in, she has made a lasting impact because of her motivation and drive to succeed. Today, she is a dominant player and captain on the Edina Varsity Basketball and Track & Field Team.
Biewen has been awarded for her motivation and high rankings among all sports she’s participated in during high school. She has earned one letter in Tennis, three in Track & Field, and four in Basketball, as she has consistently stuck with Basketball all four years. She has also gotten all-conference in Basketball for three years and in Track & Field for two years.
This natural motivation Biewen possesses has encouraged her to succeed on and off the court. It has been heard from many that balancing athletics and academics can be a challenge but it is hasn’t been an issue for Biewen, as she has consistently performed her best because of her outstanding inner-drive. Biewen described her self-motivation, “For me it hasn’t been too hard to balance sports and school because I’ve been doing it since 9th grade– in three different sports. I just really have to manage my time wisely because I am very busy.”
The passion Katybeth has for Basketball will stay with her for a lifetime, and it will take her much farther than the end of high school. Biewen explained, “I definitely plan to play Basketball in college, and I will probably be in Division 3 sports. I haven’t decided where I’m going quite yet.”
Now, at the end of the Basketball season, Biewen and her teammates are under more pressure than ever. In last night’s game (March 14th), the State Quarter-Finals against Duluth East, they performed extremely well and beat the team 50 to 46. Biewen scored 16 points, with one 3-pointer. It was also noted that MC McGrory was at her comeback after a concussion, and coach Matt Nilsen stated, “Biewen had 28 in the last time and today, it was MC’s turn. . . that what’s a good team does: one steps up and [others] will follow.”
