As winter approaches, students at Edina High School are celebrating the season through sports, festive family traditions, and food. At EHS, December usually features the annual Winter Toy Drive, the Student Council elections, Sadie’s, and the success of beloved winter sports—especially hockey.
For many students, skiing has taken center stage as one of the most popular wintertime activities at Edina. Junior Abby Nichol said she’s excited to ski again this year. “I’ve skied since fourth grade,” she said. “I do it for fun with my friends.”
While Nichol is returning to a longtime tradition, students such as senior Layla Mohamed and freshman Lamiya Gedi are new to the sport. “I’m learning [to ski],” Mohamed said. “My best friend will teach us how to do it.”
For senior Philip Colwell, winter is all about staying active, whether that’s through skiing or other activities. “I’ll probably be skiing at Highlands, trick skiing, outdoor skating, playing some pond hockey, just running around,” Colwell said. “Might play some Ultimate Frisbee at Braemar Dome before school.”
Students also enjoy holiday traditions. Gedi plans on making snowmen and watching “Frozen.” Nichol also plans to watch a movie with friends during the winter; her favorite holiday classic is the timeless “Home Alone.” For Colwell, a favorite tradition includes sharing food and time with others. “My favorite part about the holidays is eating food with my family and friends and making homemade pizzas for Christmas Eve,” he said.
Outside of sports and activities, winter this year will provide students with time for family and rest with two full weeks of winter break. “I might sleep in,” Mohamed said. “I like the cold weather.”
