Over spring break, four Elkay water bottle filling stations were attached to drinking fountains located around the school. There are ones located by EPAC, the main office, the cafeteria, and close to the language hallways. Water bottle filling stations allow you to fill up a reusable water bottle in a quick, upright fashion, with purified water.
Student-run environmental group Project Earth fostered the Hydration Station Project. The purpose of the project is “To encourage the use of reusable water bottles, so it cuts down the amount of plastic bottles entering the waste stream,” said Senior Elizabeth Elliot, a member of Project Earth. In fact, there is a meter atop each station that indicates the total amount of plastic water bottles that have been prevented from entering the waste system each time you fill up.
According to Elliot, water bottles are “A lot easier to fill, and you can get the water all the way to the top.”
As of today, (April 24th at 10:30), approximately 5637 plastic water bottles were prevented from entering the waste stream!
