These two candidates were neck and neck for much of the day, both polling at 25%. The third place candidate was Ron Paul and Newt Gingrich ended up in fourth place. Paul polled at 21% and Gingrich polled at 13%.
John McCain pledged his support to Mr. Romney after his victory. In Manchester, Mr. McCain was quoted by Al Jazeera as saying “I’m really here for one reason and one reason only and that is to make sure that we make Mitt Romney the next president of the United States of America.”
On January 4, the New York Times reported that Minnesota congresswoman Michelle Bachman ended her campaign after coming in second to last at the caucus, though she did not state which candidate she will be endorsing. Former Texas governor Rick Perry, the fifth place finisher, decided to reevaluate his campaign back home and also dropped out of the race.
