Harry Potter Club
September 20, 2016
Calling all Potterheads! The first meeting for Harry Potter Club is on Wednesday, September 21st at 3:15 PM in the Edina High School’s library. Harry Potter Club is a great opportunity for students to connect with upperclassmen and lowerclassmen over something they are passionate about: Harry Potter! The hp book series follows the adventures of a wizard named Harry Potter and his two best friends, Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley. The Golden Trio struggles with Lord Voldemort, a dark wizard who wants to enslave all magical and non-magical people. The meetings are low-key and lots of fun. Harry Potter Club is “a club of very nerdy students who love Harry Potter and like to share their love of Harry Potter,” said senior Rozy Eastaugh. But don’t worry muggles and squibs, even if you don’t get that reference, the club welcomes all those from Harry Potter trivia masters to those who are just dipping their toes into the Wizarding World. “You can come to learn more about Harry Potter or come and appreciate the love you already have,” said Eastaugh. Even if you are uncertain about joining the club, do it! Harry Potter Club is not a big commitment, “it’s a fun group, it’s kinda an easy come, easy go group. It’s a low stress activity where you can come talk about Harry Potter and all things Pottermore with people who like Harry Potter too,” said Harry Potter Club advisor, Sara Swenson.
The first meeting will focus on sorting First Years (newbies to the club) by their strengths / weaknesses and personalities into their respective Hogwarts Houses: Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff, and Slytherin. If you have any questions: Molly Lepeska is the head of Gryffindor, Kylie Poxon is the head of Slytherin, Rozy Eastaugh is the head of Ravenclaw, Lois Urban is the head of Hufflepuff, the headmaster is Molly Sparrow, and the groundskeeper is Irene Jensen. “There are six main positions… the four heads of houses, the headmaster, and the groundskeeper,” said senior Molly Lepeska. Each of these six titles may be different, but the responsibility is split up evenly.
Despite Edina High School’s endless varieties of clubs for students, Harry Potter Club has 100 students signed up for the 2016-2017 school year. Members can anticipate Harry Potter related activities revolving around the book series and the movies. Activities may include Harry Potter trivia night, Harry Potter discussions, the Yule Ball, going-off campus for a Quidditch match, movie night, Pottermore, cookie contests, dressing like a proper wizard or witch, scavenger hunts, crafts, and the House Cup. A big event for the club members is the Yule Ball. In “The Goblet of Fire”, J.K. Rowling’s fourth Harry Potter book, readers discover the magic of the Triwizard Tournament and it’s tradition, the Yule Ball. The Heads of the Houses have decided to create their own take on the Yule Ball as a school event. The Yule Ball will be in the form of a formal dance for early or mid December.
