Top 10 universities that EHS students apply to
November 9, 2018
It’s that time of year again…college application season! With an outstanding graduation rate of 96.8%, attending college after high school is the norm for Edina High School students. The only question is, where do they go?
Whether you’re a senior in the midst of college applications or just curious, here is a list of the top 10 colleges that EHS students have been applying to:
- University of Minnesota – Twin Cities
- University of Wisconsin – Madison
- University of St. Thomas
- Iowa State University
- Gustavus Adolphus College
- St. Olaf College
- University of Minnesota – Duluth
- University of Iowa
- Normandale Community College
- University of Michigan
This list consists of a large range of colleges, from smaller liberal art schools such as St. Olaf to much bigger colleges such as the University of Minnesota. This variety represents the EHS student body well, showing how almost everyone has unique preferences. From colleges chosen to majors selected, EHS students are diverse and distinct.
One trend among these schools is their location. All of them are located in the Midwest region, which shows that many students prefer staying close to Minnesota. However, many who want to try something new and “escape” Minnesota, choose schools that are further away in the south, or on the east or west coasts. Some of these top colleges are University of Southern California, University of Denver, University of Colorado at Boulder, Arizona State University, and Boston College. These colleges have received many applications from EHS students.
EHS students apply to a variety of colleges that fit their own interests and preferences, and this top ten list gives only a small glimpse into the different paths that students take after graduating high school.

Where did the data come from that supported this article? If the data is easily accessible, it would be interesting to create a few visualizations that show more than just the top 10 schools that students applied to. Use a heat map to show which states had the most applications. Where were the most acceptances? Male vs female applicants? Where did the class of 2018 students actually go? How about vs class of 2014? 2010? I wonder if there are trends.
There are so many ways to make this article more interesting, whether that is by using visualizations to engage the reader, or to dig deeper to find information that is more relevant.
