5. Vernacular
Somehow the students of Edina High School have established their own set of words and phrases that only we can understand. Words like “chirp”, “kill”, and “scoop” would seem foreign to others, but for Hornets they roll off the tongue. All the vocab might seem like a lot to take in, which is why we make up for it by shortening everything else: Braemar fields and ice rink are faithfully referred to as “The Mar”, the Imperial House restaurant goes by “ImpHouse”, and why waste your breath on saying “Junior Gold A” when you could just say “Jigga-A”? This might seem weird to other schools, but we think having our own language is a #scoooop. Which leads us to our next topic…
4. Fwitters
Fake Twitters took EHS by storm circa 2010 with the creation of an Edina Gossip account. Since then, anonymous Twitter accounts have been popping up everywhere. While some students may complain about the all the accounts, I appreciate @EdinaMice ‘s warnings of a mousetrap on 62.
3. Senior Portraits for Non-Seniors
I’m not sure when expensive cameras became a thing at Edina, but they’re here to stay. While people from other schools may use pictures from a pocket-sized digital camera or even their Macbook Photobooth as a profile picture, students at Edina will opt for a high-definition, color-contrasted gem hoping to rack up 100+ “Likes”.
2. Crocs
Unless Mario Batali is secretly running a high school for prospective nurses, no other educational establishment embraces Crocs as much as Edina High School. Students wear them before and after sports games, to dances, and just around school. True, they look like rubber dog toys strapped to our feet—but we can pull ‘em off.
1. Shirts on Shirts on Glasses on Shirts
Students EHS will jump on any chance it gets to make more apparel. Whether it be for school dances, clubs, state tournaments, superfans, or just Edina in general, we can never have enough. Last year, when regular t-shirts were becoming a little too mainstream, senior guys mixed things up with customized sunglasses to wear to the State Hockey Tournament…which was indoors. Besides the glasses, we’ve seen bandanas, drawstring bags, sweatshirts, sweatpants, and pinnies made for all sorts of reasons. This year, the high school is even thinking of selling green, black, and white t-shirts to students at a discount for sporting events, because we could all use three more shirts.
